How Much Protein Do You Actually Need? (And Why You’re Probably Under eating)

One of the most common questions we get at Shelby Symmetry is simple:


“How much protein should I be eating?”


And most people expect a complicated answer. They expect numbers, formulas, or something hard to follow.


The truth is, it doesn’t need to be complicated. But it does need to be intentional.


Most busy professionals are significantly under-eating protein — not because they don’t care, but because they’ve never been shown what it actually looks like in practice.


A simple, effective starting point is this: aim for roughly 0.7 to 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight, depending on your goals and activity level.


So if you weigh 150 pounds, your target might fall somewhere between 105 and 150 grams per day.


That number sounds high to a lot of people at first. That’s because most people are nowhere near it.


The next mistake people make is trying to eat all of that protein in one or two meals. That doesn’t work well. Your body responds better when protein is spread throughout the day.


What does that look like in real life?


Instead of one large intake, you might structure it like this:

• A solid protein-based breakfast to start your day

• A balanced lunch with a clear protein source

• A dinner that prioritizes protein, not just sides

• One or two simple, high-protein snacks to fill the gaps


This doesn’t require perfection or complex meal prep. It requires awareness and some basic planning.


When protein intake is where it should be, most people notice a few things quickly. Hunger becomes more manageable. Energy levels stabilize. Workouts feel more productive. Recovery improves.
